Over this weekend, two major Antifa incidents have taken place, both of which involved assaults and the restriction of Free Speech. It seems, however, that the problems run even deeper than this. Reports suggest that police in Berkeley, California “deliberately allowed masked “Antifa” anarchists to jump a barricade and attack a demonstration.”
At least five assaults took place including on the leader of the Patriot Prayer event, Joey Gibson. The Mercury reported that:
“Berkeley police chief Andrew Greenwood defended how police handled the protest, saying they made a strategic decision to let the anarchists enter to avoid more violence. Greenwood said “the potential use of force became very problematic” given the thousands of peaceful protesters in the park. Once anarchists arrived, it was clear there would not be dueling protests between left and right so he ordered his officers out of the park and allowed the anarchists to march in.”
This has been corroborated by the Associated Press who report that “Berkeley Police Chief Andrew Greenwood said officers were told not to actively confront the anarchists. He applauded officers’ restraint, saying it forestalled greater violence.”
The original “No to Marxism” protest that had been scheduled was called off due to fears of violence from counter protesters, yet a small group did turn up to brave the wave of hatred that accompanied the more than 2,000 Antifa who appeared. Of these 2,000, it is estimated that over 100 broke through police lines with the intention of causing violence.
In Berkeley, Antifa members have been reported assaulting Trump supporters and “people who did not look like they were Antifa.” This includes members of the press who were there to cover the event. Again, it seems as though the police have been told to “stand down” as they retreated back to the station house leaving Antifa to attack demonstrators.
As of yet, mainstream media outlets have refused to condemn the activities of these violent thugs. In fact, CNN has made waves by comparing those in the movement to World War II soldiers fighting the Nazis.
A petition is underway to ask the government to list Antifa as a Terrorist Organization; the goal of 100,000 signatures was passed within days and it is now being sent to the White House in hope that this group will be officially proscribed. If they are, it will mean that any corporations or special interest groups that have been funding Antifa will have to stop immediately, or risk heavy penalties.
