On Sunday, House Of Blues Myrtle Beach (HOBMB) announced that the July 23rd Jamey Johnson concert cancelled via their Facebook page.

Jamey Johnson concert cancelled due to the artists’s apparent refusal to disarm while performing at the venue. While Johnson and his team have not responded to requests for more information, several of his band members objected to any suggestion that they were at fault. One member of Johnson’s band, drummer Tony TC Coleman, responded on Facebook as well (the post has since been hidden or removed).

AS A MEMBER OF JAMEY’S BAND, HOUSE OF BLUES MANAGEMENT “LIVE NATION ” WAS WRONG FOR HOW THEY TREATED THE SITUATION. JAMEY WAS READY TO GIVE AN AMAZING PERFORMANCE AS HE HAS DONE EVERY NIGHT SINCE THE YEAR AND 3 MONTHS I’VE BEEN IN HIS BAND. I STAND WITH HIM ON THIS. HOUSE OF BLUES DID’NT NEED TO TREAT US LIKE WE WERE TERRORIST. THEY PUT A MEDAL DETECTOR BETWEEN JAMEY’S BUSSES AND THE STAGE ENTRANCE AND THE ONLY PEOPLE COMING IN AND OUT OF HIS BUSES WAS US. HIS BAND AND CREW AND WE ALL HAVE LAMINATED STAGE IDENTIFICATION. WE DID NOT COME TO HOUSE OF BLUES TO BE TREATED LIKE WE ARE GOING TO KILL THE FANS. IF SOMEONE CAME BACKSTAGE TO HARM ANYBODY YOU BETTER PRAY THERE IS A JAMEY JOHNSON TYPE INDIVIDUAL AROUND.

Band member Melonie Cannon replied to several comments on the House of Blues Facebook announcement. Cannon writes “No one in our band or crew carried a gun in that building… FYI.” She also defended Johnson from people who claimed the singer had a drinking problem, saying he’d been sober for several years.

This incident has already sparked renewed debate over gun rights, property rights, personal safety, and public safety. The debate raged in the comments of the HOBMB Jamey Johnson concert cancelled post. Discussion about whether the band should be allowed to legally carry a weapon into the venue. Questions regarding carry permits. Fans often have to go through metal detectors or have bags searched, why shouldn’t artists, some asked. It’s a particularly sensitive topic after recent attacks at concerts in London and Paris. Not to mention such incidents as the Aurora movie theater or Orlando nightclub shootings here in America.

Gun control hasn’t been much of an issue since President Trump took office. However, many see the gun-friendly national leadership as an opportunity to challenge past gun control laws. There is no indication that this particular incident was politically motivated. It appears to be as simple as Jamey Johnson asserting his personal rights and the venue asserting their property rights. So, whose rights, whose liberty wins out? Thomas Jefferson defined liberty (rights) as,

Rightful liberty is unobstructed action according to our will within limits drawn around us by the equal rights of others. I do not add ‘within the limits of the law’ because law is often but the tyrant’s will, and always so when it violates the rights of the individual.

  1. Assuming this venue has a contract that states this policy. If the band agreed to the venue policies and signed the contract, they are bound to it. If this no-gun rule was only stated upon the Bands arrival. That’s on the venue. Their house their rules. A private business has the right to have ignorant rules. We have the right not to support that business.
